Protecting the Perfect Smile

The health of your teeth is too easy to take for granted, but at Central Florida Smiles, we believe in supporting your oral hygiene all year long. Although many people find dental care to be intimidating, maintaining strong and healthy teeth is easier than you might think. Through some very simple practices, you can breeze into your next dental appointment with confidence.

Apart from brushing regularly, there are a few trouble-free habits which can boost your smile and leave your mouth feeling fresher than ever before. One of the most straightforward and effortless ways to enhance your oral hygiene is through the regular use of mouthwash.

Although brushing can be effective in loosening food and bacteria from the teeth, mouthwash can reach the hard-to-get places. With only a swish or two, you can effectively kill bacteria that your brushing technique is unable to reach. It also reduces plaque and prevents future build-up while strengthening the enamel of the teeth. Apart from the obvious advantages of hygiene, you and those around you can enjoy the added benefit of extra fresh breath.

It is important to follow the prescribed usage of mouthwash. More is not always better and being gentle to your teeth is just as essential as giving them a rigorous cleaning. Build mouthwash into your daily routine by gargling for at least 45 seconds before you brush and floss. This simple addition can make a big difference for your next trip to the dentist.

Top Down Health

Another way to boost the health of your teeth is through the application of topical fluoride. Fluoride is a mineral compound which strengthens your enamel and prevents tooth decay. By building a more acid-resistant surface, the teeth are less vulnerable to bacteria. Although fluoride is often found in mouthwash, toothpaste or even the daily water we drink, it is most effective when placed directly on the surface of the teeth.

Dentists usually apply a gel or varnish with a high concentration of fluoride. This is kept on the teeth for a few minutes and patients are asked not to eat, drink or smoke for thirty minutes after the treatment. This gives the active ingredient a chance to do its work before being naturally rinsed away. Topical fluoride treatment is a safe and effective way to arm your teeth against bacteria and give you a head start to hygiene. However, we do not recommend having a fluoride treatment before the initial bonding of your braces, as it will distort bonding process.

Prevention That Lasts

At Central Florida Smiles, we are committed to the health and happiness of your teeth from start to finish. We believe in prevention rather than waiting for problems to appear. Through occasional topical fluoride treatments, as well as brushing, flossing and the daily use of mouthwash, you can provide your teeth the foundation they need to thrive.
